Organisational Setting and Reporting

This internship is located at the UNIC in Dar-es-Salaam. UNICs are the principal sources of information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are located, they are also responsible for promoting greater public understanding of and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating information on the work of the Organization to people everywhere, especially in developing countries.

Internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department. And the availability of the intern.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

The successful intern will be assigned to the following areas according to his/her specific

competencies in any of the following: Journalism, Communication, Information Technology and

Library Science.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • ย Monitor the media for news stories of interest to the UN and assist to prepare press

bulletin;

  • ย Assist in public information projects of UNIC, UN Communication Group and the UN

Country Team.

  • ย Assist in producing social media plans and campaigns, as well as explore more potential

online initiatives to raise visibility of UN works;

  • ย Assist UNIC in maintaining its social media channels;
  • ย Assist in the organization and execution of events to mark UN days observances, press

conferences, media launches, campaigns, educational outreach or exhibitions;

  • ย Help design various information materials, including publication covers, presentation

templates, flyers, infographics and social media visuals;

  • ย Help take photos of events, when required and provide assistance in managing the

photo library.

  • ย Provide assistance in shooting and editing film videos, mix sound and slideshows, if

required.

  • ย Provide general office support (e.g. processing correspondence, maintaining files,

records, and/or contact directory/databases, organizing meetings, taking meeting

minutes, etc.)

  • ย Researching background information in response to queries and providing substantive

assistance in the dissemination of information at exhibitions and other logistical support

to the centre, including assisting with the library work.

  • ย Perform other related duties, as required.

Competencies

COMMUNICATION: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly

interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and

exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to

match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

PLANNING AND ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies;

identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate

amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies

when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

CLIENT ORIENTATION: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be โ€œclients โ€ and

seeks to see things from clientsโ€™ point of view; Establishes and maintains productive partnerships

with clients by gaining their trust and respect; Identifies clientsโ€™ needs and matches them to

appropriate solutions; Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clientsโ€™

environment to keep informed and anticipate problems; Keeps clients informed of progress or

setbacks in projects; Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: a. Be enrolled in, or have completed,ย a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,

b. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelorโ€™s leavel or equivalent).

Applicants must also:

  • ย Be computer literate in standard software applications
  • ย Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
  • ย Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English is the working language of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required

for the internship. Knowledge of Kiswahili as well as other local language is an asset.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, or sexual harassment, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts. The term โ€œsexual exploitationโ€ means any actual or attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, differential power, or trust, for sexual purposes, including, but not limited to, profiting monetarily, socially or politically from the sexual exploitation of another. The term โ€œsexual abuseโ€ means the actual or threatened physical intrusion of a sexual nature,ย whether by force or under unequal or coercive conditions. The term โ€œsexual harassmentโ€ means any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence or humiliation, when such conduct interferes with work, is made a condition of employment or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment, and when the gravity of the conduct warrants the termination of the perpetratorโ€™s working relationship. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
