About National Audit Office (NAOT)
The National Audit Office (NAO) of Tanzania is an independent Parliamentary body in Tanzania which is responsible for auditing central government departments, government agencies and non-departmental public bodies. The NAO also carries out value for money (VFM) audits into the administration of public policy. The office is headed by the Chief Auditor General appointed by the President of Tanzania. OFFICE OF THE CONTROLLER AND AUDITOR GENERAL (NAOT) Article 143 gives the Controller and Auditor General of the United Republic of Tanzania, the responsibility to control all funds from the General Fund of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania , and conduct audits of revenue and expenditure of public resources as approved by the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Similarly, Article 143 The Controller and Auditor General after conducting such an audit of revenue and expenditure at least once a year, must submit an audit report to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania before 31 March, and Mr. President within seven (7) days will direct the relevant Ministers to present the information to Parliament.
In addition, in ensuring that the Controller and Auditor General performs this constitutional duty, Section 20 of the Public Audit Act, Chapter 418 has established a National Audit Office headed by a Controller and Auditor General. Pursuant to this Article, the Controller and Auditor General, on behalf of Parliament, shall examine, question and audit the accounts submitted to him as prescribed under the Public Finance Act, the Local Government Finance Act and any other law, and to perform any other duties which he or she is authorized to perform by or under the said Act.
Similarly, Section Four of the Public Audit Act, requires the Controller and Auditor General, through the National Audit Office to conduct various types of audits including audits; compliance audit; efficiency audit; technical inspection; diagnostic inspections; and audit of ICT Systems.
