Programme Description
The programme is intended to address the contemporary needs in the labor market economy in Tanzanian society and at the global level by accommodating international educational standards, emerging teaching and learning methodologies, and global trends in education and technology. These global trends also necessitate the review of the higher education curricula to enable students to integrate new pedagogical models, aligning with international accreditation standards and incorporating contemporary global issues in teaching and learning, such as life skills, climate change, Gender-Responsive Pedagogy (GRP) and Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT). It again intends to prepare qualified graduates who will serve in secondary schools as teachers with knowledge, skills, and competence in subject or content and practical skills in teaching the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer science, Biology, Nutrition, Agriculture and Geography. 86 The programme is further, expected to equip teachers with relevant work skills, and knowledge crucial for unfolding their talents potential for the self-employment and/or employability in the labor market economy. The skills include critical thinking, hardworking, respect, communication and expression, analytical skills, problem solving, tolerance, positive attitudes, teamwork spirit, accountability, adaptability and patriotism spirit. The establishment of this programme is based on the view of holistic nature of human wellbeing, that is, humans are both social and scientific beings and therefore they have to be developed in both aspects. In this regard, this program prepares student teachers with knowledge, skills and attitudes required to effectively teach mathematics and sciences to secondary school students. The ultimate goal is to create a generation of well-trained mathematicians and natural scientists required to serve the society in various social and economic sectors. To achieve all these, secondary schools are expected to effectively implement the revised curricula to prepare individuals who can take advantage in the dynamic world of science and technology and competitive labor market economy to contribute towards individuals’ welfare and national development socially, politically, and economically.
Learning Outcomes
- Broad and comparative knowledge of the general scope of Education and its processes, its different areas and applications, and its interactions with related subjects.
- A detailed knowledge of the teaching subjects.
- Critical understanding of the essential theories, principles and concepts of education and teaching subjects and of the ways in which these are developed through the main methods of inquiry in educational and teaching subjects.
- An awareness of the nature of the Mathematics and Science.
- An awareness of the nature of teaching and learning processes, ethics and global debates on different educational areas and issues.
- A detailed knowledge of integration between acquired knowledge and the practical world.
- Well-developed skills for the gathering, evaluation, analysis and presentation of information, ideas, concepts, quantitative and/or qualitative data, drawing on a wide range of current sources.
- Skills in the use of routine materials, practices and the use of information and communication technology in Educational and teaching subjects.
- Enhanced skills to fit the 21st century world such as collaboration, agility, critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, information searching, analytical skills, communication skills and leadership by influence.
