Deadline: 31-Oct-21

Applications are now open for the Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders (EWCL) Grant Program to design and implement a group wildlife conservation project.

The Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders minimizes training costs through in-kind donations and foundation support. They expect participants to capitalize on training development support programs or staff development training opportunities provided by their organization to pay for these costs when they are available.

However, your ability to contribute to course costs with organizational support will not factor into whether or not you are accepted into the program.

Successful candidates are selected based on their enthusiasm, skills and vision. They seek diverse candidates from non-profit organizations, foundations, federal and state governments and the private sector.

Applicants should be interested in all three components of the course: Networking and career mentoring opportunities, training in leadership and wildlife conservation campaign skills, and implementing a wildlife conservation project in a team setting.

Participants will be expected to devote time throughout the two-year period to designing and implementing a group wildlife conservation project Applicants should have at least three years’ experience in the wildlife conservation field, with at least 15 years in the profession ahead of them.

EWCL participants will benefit from:

  • Mentoring opportunities by seasoned conservation professionals;
  • Networking opportunities for emerging leaders and their representative organizations to build solid peer support for long-term successful careers;
  • Open “cross-pollination” opportunities among different NGOs, foundations, private and public sector groups involved in wildlife conservation, thereby breaking down traditionally existing competition and communication challenges between different sectors of the wildlife conservation community;
  • Hands-on comprehensive conservation campaign experience including all implementation aspects from inception to completion and evaluation; and
  • Leadership and skills training in wide-ranging topics relevant to real-work experience of early career professionals.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The two-year training program entails a week of training each year, as well as a final two-day training and graduation ceremony. Throughout the two years, participants will work in teams to develop, implement and evaluate a wildlife conservation project in the United States or globally.
  • International applicants must show an ability to cover the cost of two flights to the United States, and must be fluent in English.
