The National Electoral Commission (NEC) is an independent Government Institution established in 1993 under Article 74(1) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania of 1977. According to Article 74(7) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania of 1977 and Article 4(4) of the National Election Law (No. 1 of 1985), the Director of Elections is the Secretary of the Commission who is also appointed by the President.
